Patrick O'Connor, the author of the new book Scapegoat: The Chino Hills Murders and the Framing of Kevin Cooper. He is also the author of The Framing of Mumia Abu-Jamal. This will be part of a 12-stop tour to focus on the death penalty. Sunday, February 12, 12:45 p.m. Darwin Day Celebration Charles Darwin's discovery of evolution of species by natural selection is the fundamental unifying theory of the biological sciences. The theory has profound implication for our understanding of ourselves and our place in the universe. Join the Humanist-Non-Theist group for lunch, birthday cake, and a discussion with Dr. Sarah Strand, who will talk about parallels between biological and cultural evolution. Strand, an adjunct faculty at California State University, Sacramento and a research supervisor at the UC-Davis, will discuss why religion has been present in human society since the dawn of humankind, and the psychological origins of religion, showing that human brains evolved to have a propensity to believe in the supernatural. Sarah will conclude the presentation with evidence of how religion has “survived” by expanding and adjusting to changes in culture, or its “environment.” Lunch will be available for purchase at 12:00. This informative film, full of surprising news, is based on the work of Spencer Wells, who is both innovative scientist and enthusiastic host. He and his crew scour the world for indigenous people with deep roots in one place, asking for samples of DNA to test, in order to piece together our “big family” genetic tree.
